Seaton Delaval Hall is a magnificent stately home and estate, situated north of Newcastle upon Tyne, between the towns of Seaton Sluice and Seaton Delaval.
We have visited here a number of times – it’s just a nice day out filled with unusual things and so unlike any other National Trust property and that’s because the Delaval family who once owned this hall knew how to have a good time.
It was once described as a place for the theatrical, a bit of drama (literally, as in plays!) and some mischief during the Georgian era, so it was THE place to be, if you liked parties and the social scene in the 1700s!
The Delaval family liked to showcase theatrical productions, have masked balls and play tricks on overnight guests.

The house was also filled with oddities (and still is!), which include an upside down room for starters.

Yes, its upside down and so very clever!
Ships in bottles and giant anchors in the basement.

Other rooms filled with sculptures, paintings and other interesting things, like a display of wigs.

And of course, the giant disco ball still hangs in the foyer.

If the interior wasn’t spectacular enough, the exterior consisting of immaculately maintained gardens also doesn’t disappoint.

The current members of the Delaval family wanted to preserve the legacy of the hall and encourage greater public access so in 2009 the National Trust, after doing some extensive renovation work, assumed custody of the property and its gardens.

Truly a unique place!
