Iconic Versailles

Concluding our French trip (which was primarily to explore Normandy), we decided to visit the famous Palace or Chateau de Versailles – as a last stop before returning to Paris.

Norman D Mouse* living it up in Versailles

Our ticket was booked for 9am so we arrived at 08:45…..and queue was astounding but luckily It moved quite quickly once 9am arrived.

You call this a queue?!….nobody queues better than the British! (a proud fact)

The Palace itself is enormous and there is an app provided that help to navigate the interiors but we eventually ditched the app and just wandered around.

So many rooms filled with Baroque style art.

The famous Hall of Mirrors and the royal bedrooms are upstairs.

And the ceilings are absolutely beautiful.

Visit all of the rooms on all the floors- take your time to appreciate each one – because you can’t re-enter the Palace once you have exited to visit the Gardens.

And the Gardens are something else …..all on their own…it’s just totally wow!

Try to time your entry into the Gardens with the Musical Fountain display – it just adds a little bit extra to the experience!

There are so many fountains but my favourite was called Flora. Its just stunning 🙂

Top tips:

  • Pre-book your ticket at the Official Chateau de Versailles ticket site here
  • Get there early – even if you have a pre-booked ticket….you will be amazed by the epic queues.
  • Be prepared for bag checks and security points.
  • Wear comfortable footwear – the palace is HUGE as are the gardens – so you will be walking for most of your time here on various surfaces including marble and gravel.
  • Your ticket also gets you entry to a number of smaller museums outside the palace gates, including the Coach House showcasing the coaches used by the French royal family.
Riding in style…

And with that we bid ‘au revoir’ to the magnificent palace of Louis XIV, the Sun King.

* Norman D Mouse can be purchased at the British Normandy Memorial in Ver-sur-Mer, Normandy. Proceeds contribute to the upkeep of the war memorial.
