Golden domes, timeless heritage, leafy boulevards and mountain views — the Bulgarian capital of Sofia is one of Europe’s most quietly captivating city breaks.
As you know, in our travels we are always drawn to lots of interesting places…especially those that do not need to shout to be unforgettable — and Sofia is exactly that kind of city.
There is something wonderfully self-assured about Bulgaria’s capital: elegant but unpretentious, historic yet full of life, and wrapped in the kind of mountain light that makes everything feel…well…just nice.

The joy of Sofia is that so much of it can be discovered on foot.
One of the city’s most iconic views is of the magnificent Alexander Nevsky Cathedral.

The tiny St George Rotunda sits quietly amid the city bustle, and the elegant buildings such as the Ivan Vazov National Theatre (with its phenomenal fountains) bring a dash of old-world grandeur.

There is also the Serdica Roman town, discovered when excavation work began on the Metro system in the early 2000’s and of course the archaeological museum is astounding.

Try to catch the changing of the guard – a rather low-key performance but still fascinating to watch. (Opposite the archaeological museum)

For foodies – there is a lovely mix here too: traditional taverns, contemporary brunch spots and independent cafés invite you to linger.
Sofia is an easy city to enjoy. Give yourself two or three days and Sofia rewards you generously.
That, perhaps, is Sofia’s real magic.
It is not a city that performs for you; it simply invites you in.
And in doing so, it offers exactly the sort of escape we would return to again and again.
If you love city breaks with depth, ease and a touch of the unexpected, Sofia is one to book before everyone else catches on.
